'The Joy of Cytanet - Let’s do the Time-Warp again…'

Over the past couple of months, quite a few of you have approached me about problems with your broadband connections. This seems to hold especially true at the eastern end of Oroklini around the Mediterranean Sunrise complex.

What seems to be happening is that broadband [I-Choice] connections, which should be permanent, are severed with alarming regularity, sometimes as many as four or five times per day.

Speaking as someone who uses the Internet to earn a living, I know how frustrating it is when things stop working.

And, despite the fact that Cyprus supposedly boasts the 3rd most modern telecommunications network on Earth, things do seem to stop working with alarming regularity.

So, at the end of August I decided to start compiling a short fact-sheet about dealing with internet connection problems which can be printed and referred to when things go wrong. My quest for information led me to the help section of Cytanet’s website. Unfortunately, the very first thing which caught my eye was the following, evidently designed to show Cytanet as ‘State of the Art’*:

“CYTANET and Windows 95”

Hang on a minute... Windows 95?
With my confidence suitably inspired by this little gem, I proceeded deeper into the belly of Cytanet support in search of the information needed for my factsheet and suddenly found myself back in 1996, a time when broadband was only a twinkle in BT’s eyes and the Internet consisted of a mere 36 million global users [compared to almost 1.5 billion today]. In short, there is not a single shred of information concerning broadband connections in the entire support section; which is a shame really, since the bulk of Cytanet’s clientele are using broadband as a means of accessing the ‘Interweb’.

After staring at things in disbelief for a while, I decided to simulate a serious fault with my own broadband and give Cytanet’s telephone support line a call:

“Due to increased demand, your wait will be approximately 30 minutes.”

I could make a comment about shortcomings in Cyta’s support infrastructure at this stage. In fact, I just have. Nevertheless, after nearly one and a half hours on the phone, I was finally in possession of all the information necessary to complete my own little project.

To be fair, Cytanet’s telephone support is actually quite good, but if you want to save yourself a substantial amount of time I would suggest looking at my factsheet.

*Unfortunately, the ‘Art’ in this case appears to be Origami
