“Ad-Aware” & “Spybot” Protection for your PC.
Last month I introduced you to Avast Anti-Virus. This month I’m completing your PC’s protection package with Ad-Aware and Spybot - Search & Destroy. As always, you can catch up on past articles online if you’ve missed anything.
So... What is Spyware?
As the name implies, spyware is designed to infiltrate your computer and... errr... spy on you. Like some slick James Bond style secret agent, it will insinuate itself into your machine’s workings and casually keep an eye on what you are doing without your system ever noticing.

Spyware activities can range from monitoring your surfing habits and reporting them back to base for the purpose of compiling internet-user behaviour statistics, to logging whatever keys you press when you’re online in the hope of discovering your banking passwords and such.
In order to preserve your online privacy then, you need a means of stopping the spy dead in his tracks. What is called for, is the computer equivalent of Bloomfeld and his fluffy white cat, sitting in wait and suavely saying something like: “I’ve been expecting you Mr Bond.” once spyware is discovered.
Then again, maybe not...
As ingenious as Bloomfeld’s schemes used to be, there was always some fatal flaw; whether it was his air-conditioning ducts, which were wide enough for Mr Bond to crawl through and cause havoc or simply the fact that he talked too much.
No, what is needed in your computer is not a program which rambles on endlessly about its own cleverness and then lets Mr Bond blow up its base at the earliest opportunity*. What’s really needed is something which sneaks up on him when he’s not looking, hits him with a hammer, fits him with concrete boots and then throws him into the shark tank while he’s still unconscious.
Which quite neatly brings me to the two aforementioned programs, which are more like well-trained henchmen than criminal masterminds.
Ad-Aware is what might be called the original anti-spyware program, made by Swedish software house Lavasoft. A slick little utility, it is capable of discovering and eliminating most current spyware threats. In stark contrast to this, Spybot is as thick as two short planks, which, believe it or not ,is actually its greatest strength, since it is simply not clever enough to be confused in the face of ever more sophisticated spyware programs trying to play tricks on it.

And lastly; I’m still looking for more feedback about the things you actually want to learn, so I’d be grateful if you’d visit the site and let me know. Click here please.
*Which actually sounds a lot like Norton Anti-Virus.
Next Month: More information about Spyware and how it affects you.
