You're never too old to learn, just like Mr. Green.

The "Mr. Green" Story

Back in the late 90s I was running a computer shop in sunny Essex on the English east coast. And while there are many tales to be told from those times, the one which always stands out for me is that of a pensioner who walked through my door one blustery autumn morning in 1999. After parking his antique Honda scooter outside the door with a resounding bang from its exhaust, this old gentleman walked into my shop fighting to remove his oversized crash helmet. Once this was safely tucked under his arm, he looked me straight in the eye, and declared in his broad North-Essex accent:

"My name's Green. I'm eighty-four years old, and I want a computer. I don't see why the kids should have all the fun!"

Smiling at his dramatic, and somewhat unconventional, entrance, I asked him the first question I always asked new customers: "What do you want to use it for?"
"I don't know yet." he replied, "But I'm a keen gardener, and I get bored in winter when there's not much to do outside, so I need something to keep me occupied."

As it turned out, Mr Green really did know nothing about computers at all; he'd never even been near one. He was, however, more than willing to learn, and he went about trying to tame this new beast I'd just installed in his living room with a will. In less than a week I'd shown him how to use the Internet and send emails to his grand children in Australia, and by the following February he was already using a 3D design program to lay out the planting arrangement for his garden in the spring.

"Mr Green learned what he wanted to know fast, and so can you."

I was looking after Mr. Green's computer until I moved to Larnaca in 2005, and for all I know he's still happily dividing his time between his garden and his computer. His story not only stays with me because of his gruff yet friendly personality, but because he demonstrated to me that even at eighty-four years old it's possible to learn a completely new skill.
